Creative That Compounds: Introducing New Hero Lab Updates
Backstroke creates and stores bulk AI backgrounds with a real home for your Hero Lab assets. Here’s what shipped and why it matters.
Here’s a pattern most ecommerce marketers know well: you nail a hero image that contains the right product, the right mood and the perfect copy. Your email goes out and it performs well.
Then, somehow, you’re rebuilding everything from scratch for your next send.
This is a bottleneck, and not something you need to live with, especially in the era of AI. Brands need more on-brand hero variants to test than their teams have hours to build. And when you do build something great, you should be able to access it, riff off of it and apply what made it successful to future sends.
Two recent Hero Lab updates fix this. Bulk Hero Variants with AI Backgrounds solves the supply side, giving you complete asset sets in one flow. The Hero Lab Library is a home where marketers find, edit, download, rename and reuse every saved hero and background.
The Problem: You Can’t Build What You Need Fast Enough
Hero images are one of the most tested elements in ecommerce email for a reason. They’re the first thing a subscriber sees. And they’re consistently one of the highest-leverage variables to optimize—with options to customize imagery, text, CTAs, animations and more.
The problem is that meaningful A/B testing requires multiple distinct variants. Running one version against another takes time, traffic and statistical patience. If building each variant takes hours of design work—sourcing or shooting a background, placing brand-correct typography, exporting across sizes—it’s easy for your testing program to stall before it starts. Ecommerce creative needs to move faster than that. A winning hero doesn’t stay fresh indefinitely, especially after repeated exposure.
Creative fatigue can show up within just a few repeated email sends, so the brands that win are the ones who can produce it fast enough to keep testing fresh variants.
The Fix: Bulk Hero Variants with AI Backgrounds
Backstroke’s Hero Lab now has two new capabilities that work together:
one to produce a full set of on-brand hero variants fast
and another to make sure none of your creative variations go to waste
Ecommerce marketers can now describe the look they want, get on-brand images and turn each one into 36 ready-to-test hero variants in a single workflow.

Inside Hero Lab, open the Bulk Variants tab. From there, you have two paths:
Bring your own images: Backstroke generates 36 brand-correct text-overlay variants per image automatically.
Generate with AI: Write a quick campaign brief, optionally drop in a product reference (PDP URL or upload) and choose 1, 3 or 6 backgrounds. Backstroke produces text-free, brand-aligned backgrounds that feed straight into your full variant set.
What keeps a high volume of images from going off-brand is the new Hero Image Brand Guidelines tab in Brand Config. It’s where you set the inputs that govern every generation: typography, CTA style, photography direction, color palette, subject guidance, reference images and an avoid list. That configuration is what ensures your 36 image variants are consistent and on-brand.
From there, you can preview and edit any variant with prev/next navigation, approve what you want and push approved assets directly to your Hero Library.
What’s Else? The Hero Lab Library
Before this update, saving a hero in Hero Lab meant that every background you uploaded or generated lived only for that session. Reusing a great shot from one campaign meant uploading it all over again, every time.

The Hero Lab Library fixes that issue. It’s a dedicated Library page inside Hero Lab where you can easily find both heroes and background images. Here’s what it does:
Find anything fast: Sort by newest. Filter for aspect ratio, date and source. You can even run a text search. The Hero Lab Library is built to scale to hundreds of assets per account, which matters as bulk variants start multiplying your output.
Edit without starting over: Click edit on any saved hero and it reopens in Create mode with full state restored. Every text field and design choice are exactly where you left them. Fixing a typo or swapping copy takes seconds, rather than a full rebuild.
Make backgrounds reusable: Save uploaded and AI-generated backgrounds to the Library. Reuse them as a base image for new heroes or feed them back in as AI reference images to steer future generations toward your best-performing visual style.
Manage at scale: Edit, download, rename or delete images. Multi-select for bulk cleanup. When bulk variants can generate up to 200+ potential assets in a single session, you need actual management tools. That’s exactly why we built this upgrade.
Why These Two Updates Belong Together
Bulk Hero Variants solves production. The Library solves persistence. Together they close a loop that previously stayed open.
When you generate 36 variants in one session, approve the best performers and push them to the Library, all images serve as email assets and training inputs. The backgrounds that worked become reference images for the next campaign’s AI generation. Your best creative teaches the tool what on-brand looks like, so future generations get better over time.
This is the compounding value that disposable creative never builds. Instead of every campaign starting from zero, your creative base appreciates with use.
These updates are useful for all ecommerce marketers, but were built for a few specific situations, in particular:
High-frequency senders who need to iterate on hero creative quickly and can’t afford to treat every campaign as a design project from scratch.
Lean creative teams that re-source or rebuild assets for every send and have accepted that as the cost of doing business.
High-volume users of bulk variants and AI backgrounds who are generating large asset sets and need to actually manage them.
Both features are live in Hero Lab now! If you’re already using Hero Lab, head to the Library tab to find assets you’ve already saved. If you haven’t tried bulk variants yet, there’s never been a better time to get started.
