How to Become a Gmail VIP Sender: What's Confirmed About the AI Inbox vs. What's Just Rumor

The internet is full of confident, unconfirmed guesses about how Gmail's AI inbox works. Here's what Google has actually said, what's still rumor and the concrete steps that earn you a spot either way.

Landing in the inbox used to be the finish line for email marketers. It’s now your starting line.

This year, Gmail launched its AI Inbox. Its Gemini 3-powered view replaces the chronological scroll with a briefing, summarizing things like "Suggested to-dos" and "Topics to catch up on." And since Gmail accounts for roughly 30% of global email users, when they change how something works, it's critical to account for.

You can authenticate perfectly and reach Gmail’s Primary tab, but placement alone doesn’t guarantee visibility in Gmail’s AI Inbox. In fact, Google says its beta AI Inbox surfaces only relevant information from Primary-tab messages, surfacing high-priority to-dos and summaries of important topics to subscribers.

Naturally, the industry has raced to explain exactly how that decision gets made. Some of what's circulating is real. A lot of it is guesswork. Here, we’ll sort out which is which, and then talk about what to actually do to thrive in the AI inbox.

What Is Gmail's AI Inbox, Really?

Here's what's confirmed, straight from Google:

  • AI Inbox launched last January and it runs on Gemini 3.

  • It’s in beta for Trusted Testers in the U.S. in English only.

  • It's an additional view, as Primary and Promotions still exist underneath it.

  • It’s organized into two sections: Things you need to act on (to-do lists, appointments, etc.) and topics worth catching up on (travel, purchase confirmations, etc.).

The detail that matters most for us is scoping. Google is explicit, saying that the AI Inbox only pulls from the Primary tab, filtering out anything spammed, archived, deleted, muted or snoozed.

So before you chase any Gmail VIP theory, ask the boring question first: is your mail even reaching Primary? That's the real prerequisite you need to meet. Read more about how to climb the ranks of Gmail’s Most Relevant list here.

What Makes a Sender a Gmail VIP? (Here's Where It Gets Murky)

This is where the internet has gotten ahead of Google. A framework published by a marketing platform in March claims Gemini 3 continuously scores every sender against precise thresholds, such as:

  • Open rate above 50% in the last 30 days

  • A reply-or-click rate above 5%,

  • Delete-without-open under 10%,

  • Full DMARC enforcement plus BIMI

While those are certainly excellent things to aspire to, Google has never confirmed a single one of these numbers. Instead, Google’s published guidance focuses on email authentication and spam rates, recommending that senders keep Postmaster Tools spam rates below 0.1% and never reach 0.3%.

One useful takeaway is that sender quality is not just about volume. Your relevance is often better understood as the share of recipients responding positively—or negatively—to what you send, rather than raw sending volume alone. Volume still matters too though, as Google also says messages should arrive at a reasonable frequency that recipients expect.

Rumored VIP criterion

What Google actually says

DMARC p=reject + BIMI required

DMARC required for bulk senders, but p=none is technically allowed; p=reject/BIMI are best practices, not confirmed AI Inbox gates

Open rate >50% in 30 days

Google does not publicly identify a 50% open-rate threshold—or any open-rate threshold—for Gmail deliverability or AI Inbox. Open rate is also not a sender-facing Postmaster Tools metric.

Reply-or-click rate >5%

Google has not published a reply-or-click threshold for deliverability or AI Inbox.

Delete-without-open <10%

Google has not published a delete-without-open metric or threshold for senders.

Spam rate <0.1%, lost at 0.3%

Google tells senders to keep Postmaster Tools spam rate below 0.1% and avoid reaching 0.3% or higher. This is a sender-guidelines threshold, not a published “VIP sender” or AI Inbox rule.

What Google Actually Enforces for Bulk Senders

This part isn't a rumor. If you send 5,000 or more messages per day to personal Gmail accounts, Google treats you as a bulk sender for its sender requirements. You’ll need to follow these non-negotiable rules:

  • Authentication: SPF, DKIM and DMARC alignment on your From-domain.

  • One-click unsubscribe is honored within 48 hours.

  • Spam rate has to be kept below 0.1%. Never let it reach 0.3%. It's calculated daily, and once you cross the 0.3% line, you're not eligible for relief until you stay under 0.3% for seven consecutive days.

  • Enforcement has teeth, as bulk emails that don’t comply can now be permanently blocked with a “550” error instead of temporarily delayed. Microsoft introduced similar requirements for Outlook and Hotmail, as well.

  • Postmaster Tools v2 replaced the old High/Medium/Low reputation scale with a binary pass/fail Compliance Status. Check it and don't guess.

  • BIMI, the standard that lets your verified logo appear beside emails, only works if your DMARC security policy is set to quarantine or reject suspicious messages. That’s a valid reason to strengthen your policy, in general.

Your AI Inbox Readiness Checklist

Rather than listening to rumors and banking on theories that were never confirmed by Google, focus on what always wins: authentic, engaging and personalized content that AI can easily summarize.

Authentication

  • Verify that SPF, DKIM and DMARC are properly aligned. In Gmail, open a test message, select the three-dot menu, then choose Show original to review its authentication results. You can also use MXToolbox to check your published SPF, DKIM and DMARC DNS records.

  • Move DMARC gradually from p=none toward enforcement. Review aggregate DMARC reports as you go, resolve authentication failures from legitimate sending platforms, then progress to p=quarantine or p=reject.

  • Publish BIMI after DMARC enforcement is in place. BIMI can show your verified brand logo in supporting inboxes, strengthening brand recognition and helping recipients quickly identify legitimate mail.

Reputation

  • Watch Postmaster Tools v2 regularly. Give yourself a buffer too, so you’re not up a creek without a paddle. For example, treat 0.08% as your real ceiling, not 0.1%.

  • Make unsubscribing effortless. Every person who complains instead of opting out is a hit to one of your metrics that matters the most.

Engagement

Create content AI can actually read.

  • Front-load your point in the first 100–150 characters.

  • Build with live text and real alt text, as AI can’t and won’t parse through image-only emails.

  • There are many more tips to keep in mind, so AI can effectively rewrite your emails. Get the full scoop on essential email design for visibility, deliverability and performance in our blog Designing for the AI Inbox: Why HTML Emails Will Win the Next Era of E-commerce.

So How Can I Really Be a Gmail VIP?

Nobody outside Google can tell you the exact formula behind Gmail’s AI Inbox. What is knowable is unglamorous, but necessary work: authenticate properly, keep your spam rate low, earn engagement instead of chasing opens and write emails a machine can actually parse. Those are the same fundamentals that have separated inbox winners from spam-folder casualties for a while now, and the AI inbox just raised the stakes.

Backstroke builds this discipline into every campaign. Our customers send authenticated, engagement-heavy, AI-readable emails that earn their place in the Primary tab . . . and stay worth summarizing once they get there.
